LADY OF SHALLOT
John William Waterhouse (British, 1849-1917) The Lady of Shalott Painting Date: 1888 This painting is based on The Lady of Shalott by Alfred Lord Tennyson. It illustrates the lines: And down the river's dim expanse Like some bold seer in a trance, Seeing all his own mischance - With a glassy countenance Did she look to Camelot. And at the closing of the day She loosed the chain, and down she lay; The broad stream bore her far away, The Lady of Shalott.

J.W.Waterhouse
This painting is based on The Lady of Shalott by Alfred Lord Tennyson. It illustrates the lines: She left the web, she left the loom, She made three paces thro' the room, She saw the water-lily bloom, She saw the helmet and the plume, She look'd down to Camelot. Out flew the web and floated wide; The mirror crack'd from side to side; "The curse is come upon me," cried The Lady of Shalott.

I went to the Garden of Love, And saw what I never had seen: A Chapel was built in the midst, Where I used to play on the green. And the gates of this Chapel were shut, And "Thou shalt not" writ over the door; So I turn'd to the Garden of Love That so many sweet flowers bore; And I saw it was filled with graves, And tomb-stones where flowers should be; And Priests in black gowns were walking their rounds, And binding with briars my joys & desires. [William Blake: The Garden of Love]

OPHELIA (J.W.WATERHOUSE) And I, of ladies most deject and wretched, That suck'd the honey of his music vows, Now see that noble and most sovereign reason, Like sweet bells jangled out of tune and harsh, That unmatch'd form and feature of blown youth Blasted with ecstasy. O, woe is me T'have seen what I have seen, see what I see. Act III, Scene i

(Arthur Hughes) Hughes described this painting as Ophelia 'approaching the water and looking back at us, singing her last song.' Inscribed on the back is the following verse: 'Ophelia (sings) And will he not come again? And will he not come again? No, no he is dead Go to thy death-bed He never will come again. His beard was as white as snow, All flaxen was his poll: He is gone, he is gone, And we cast away moan; Gramercy on his soul! And of all Christian souls, I pray God - God be wi' you. Exit'. (Jules-Joseph Lefebvre) Arthur Hughes The writing on the frame of this painting reads:
'There is a willow grows aslant the brook, That shows his hoar leaves in the glassy stream; There with fantastic garlands did she come. Of crow-flowers, nettles, daisies, and long purples. There on the pendant boughs her coronet weeds Clambering to hang an envious sliver broke. When down the weedy trophies and herself Fell in the weeping brook.' Edited by - ΑΤΜΑ on 03/12/2003 02:44:26
