On the man's head is a cap in the form of two heads of birds of prey facing each other. It is thought that this is a representation of Odin, the supreme deity of the Vikings, with his ravens. According to legend, they flew around the world gathering information to bring back to Odin. This figure is typical of Scandinavian art of the 7th to 8th centuries.

"St John the Divine in Silence" Nektary Kulyuksin 1679 Egg tempera on gesso, linen, wood 158.5 x 60.5 cm Workshop of the Kirillo-Byelozersk Monastery, Archangel
This work by an icon painter from the Kirillo-Byelozyorsk Monastery in Archangel (Arkhangelsk) depicts the apostle touching his lips with his right hand, as a sign that he is keeping silence, while with his left hand he points to the text of the Gospel According to St John. The size of the figure is exaggerated in comparison with the small angel behind the saint's shoulder. The hovering angelic form with a seven-pointed halo is an embodiment of the Holy Spirit, and symbolizes wisdom. The frame of the icon is decorated in imitation of rich silver, inlaid with niello work. On the reverse of the icon, details of the endowment are recorded: the name of the painter, the time and place where the icon was painted and the purpose for which the endowment was made. http://www.hermitagemuseum.org/html_En/03/hm3_6_8.html

| | | | --Oriental Art-- Amorous Couple "Maithuna" 10th-13th centuries Sandstone This couple, fashioned from a monolith of pinkish sandstone, formed part of the sculptural decoration of a Hindu temple. Traditional features of Indian art and tribhanga (figures with a triple bend in the body), reflecting the movements of ancient Indian dancing, are combined with relatively realistic and poetic interpretations of images, full of spirituality and sensual beauty.
